The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year course of study and assessment for students aged 16 to 19. Leading universities worldwide hold the diploma in high regard and use it directly in admissions.

Programme structure

The diploma consists of the DP core and six subject groups.

The three DP core elements

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) — a course about how we know what we claim to know.
  • Extended Essay — an independent research paper of around 4,000 words on a topic the student chooses.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) — a required strand running across both years.

The six subject groups

  1. Studies in language and literature
  2. Language acquisition
  3. Individuals and societies
  4. Sciences
  5. Mathematics
  6. The arts

Students take one subject from each group. A student who does not choose an arts subject may take a second subject from one of the other groups instead.

The maximum score is 45: up to 7 points per subject (42 across the six) plus up to 3 points from TOK and the Extended Essay. The diploma requires at least 24 points and completed CAS.

Studying the IB at Sarah

  • A plan that fits — personalised to the subjects chosen and the target grade in each one.
  • Current materials — lessons and practice updated each time the IB revises its assessment framework.
  • Less wasted time — a placement test identifies the gaps, so the route to the diploma is as short as it can honestly be.
  • Support that continues — an academic advisor stays with the student throughout, TOK and Extended Essay included.
